The election might be over, but the fight for our kids and teachers goes on!
EQUITY
Equity isn’t just a slogan. It should transform the way we educate kids. We must engage with the community to create a sense of system- and community-urgency to aggressively do “whatever it takes” for every student to achieve success in school.
SUPPORT OUR TEACHERS
We need to continue supporting our teachers with equal pay and benefits, and appropriate - and needed supports. We need more teachers to keep up with the rising student population.
TRANSPORTATION
AACPS’ transportation system needs to be fixed. We need consistent pick up/drop off times, safe bus stops, and proper enforcement of AACPS policies while on the bus.
RECESS
Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning, and to children, play is the best way to put all they learn into practice. We must ensure our kids have that outlet every day!
SAFE SCHOOLS
AACPS needs to ensure all students can learn in schools that are welcoming and safe. That not only means preventing harm from school shootings and other violent acts, but fully enforcing the new policies on bullying and bias behavior, protecting our LGBTQ+ and immigrant students from harassment and discrimination, and eliminating any use of seclusion and restraint.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
AACPS’s Special Education programs have been on the edge of federal noncompliance for years. We need to ensure all students, regardless of race, socio-economic background, age, or type of disability, are properly assessed and provided the support they are entitled to under law.
SCHOOL START TIMES
Science doesn’t lie. We need appropriate later school start times for high schools and earlier start times for elementary schools - and we need it now!
TRANSPARENCY
We need increased transparency on AACPS policies and activities. Transparency builds trust and people will not care what a person/school system knows, until they KNOW that the person/system cares.
